Typhoon Kalmaegi brought powerful winds and torrential rain to Vietnam on Friday, killing at least five people and causing widespread destruction across the country’s central provinces.
The storm hit just days after devastating the Philippines, where dozens were reported dead or missing.
As floodwaters receded, relief operations began in affected towns and industrial areas, with local authorities and residents clearing debris and repairing damaged homes across central Vietnam.
According to official media, five people were killed, three in Dak Lak Province and two in Gia Lai, while three others remain missing in Quang Ngai.
Six people were injured, 52 homes collapsed, and around 2,600 others were damaged or lost their roofs, including more than 2,400 in Gia Lai alone.
In the Philippines, where Typhoon Kalmaegi caused severe devastation earlier this week, the death toll has risen to 188, according to the national disaster agency. More than 130 people remain missing and around 90 were injured, with over 2.2 million people affected across 32 provinces.
