At least five people have been killed and ten others injured in a shooting in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials confirmed, with the attacker later shot dead during a police operation.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the gunman opened fire on civilians before being neutralized, offering condolences to the victims’ families.
Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the shooting occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, leaving multiple casualties. One of the injured later died in hospital, raising the death toll.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the suspect was killed during an attempt to arrest him. Special police forces stormed a store where the attacker had taken hostages and opened fire, including shooting at a police officer. Negotiators had attempted to resolve the situation before the final operation.
Prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko confirmed the suspect was a 58-year-old man from Moscow. Authorities also reported a fire at an apartment in Kyiv registered under the suspect’s name.
Officials said four victims were killed in the street, while another died inside the store, where the attacker used an automatic weapon.
The incident has raised serious concerns over public safety in Ukraine’s capital as investigations continue into the motive behind the attack.
