Five Civilians were killed and 12 others injured Saturday in Ukrainian shelling in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, according to pro-Russian local authorities.

"Following the shelling of the Ukrainian forces, 5 people were killed and 12 others were injured in the Donetsk People's Republic, the General Staff of the aforementioned authorities said in a statement via Telegram.

Donetsk is the capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk "Republic" in the Donbas basin in eastern Ukraine.

The pro-Moscow separatists have partially controlled this basin since 2014. The region is currently witnessing fierce battles between the Ukrainian and the Russian forces, which launched an attack on Ukraine on February 24.

"Since this morning the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic has been heavily shelled, confirming that more than two hundred 155 mm artillery shells fell on several areas on Saturday," the pro-Russian military forces in Donetsk said in a separate statement.

Russian news agencies reported that the shelling targeted a cinema hall and a cafe in the city center.
