At least five people have been killed after a small Mexican Navy aircraft crashed into waters near Galveston, triggering search operations off the coast of the US state of Texas, according to officials.
The military aircraft went down on Monday while transporting a young patient along with seven other passengers. Authorities said the crash occurred close to the shoreline near Galveston, prompting an emergency response involving both Mexican and US agencies.
In a statement cited by the Associated Press, the Mexican Navy confirmed that four of those on board were naval officers, while the remaining four were civilians, including a child. Officials did not immediately clarify which passengers were among the fatalities.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that at least five people died in the crash. Search efforts were launched in the surrounding waters to locate any remaining victims or debris from the aircraft.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities working to determine what led to the incident.
