Five people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at a youth care facility in the city of Stade near Hamburg on Monday, according to German police.
The shooting occurred at a social welfare center that includes residential units for mothers and their children. Authorities said several victims suffered serious injuries, while a suspect believed to be the gunman was taken into custody.
Police urged residents to avoid the area as emergency services responded to the scene, but confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Officials said nearby schools and childcare facilities were not at risk, and parents were able to collect their children safely. Investigators have not yet established a motive, while preliminary findings indicate the attack was unrelated to organized clan crime.
Stade, located about 40 kilometers west of Hamburg, is part of the metropolitan region and serves as the gateway to the Altes Land area, Germany's largest fruit-growing region.
