Tajikistan announced that five people were killed and five others wounded in two cross-border attacks originating from Afghanistan over the past week, according to a statement from the presidential press office on Monday.
The incident comes amid ongoing tension between Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic of 11 million people, and Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities.
Last week, Tajikistan reported that three Chinese nationals were killed in a drone strike launched from Afghan territory. Dushanbe has repeatedly warned about drug traffickers and illegal gold miners operating along the remote border region.
President Emomali Rahmon met with senior security officials to assess the situation and discuss measures to strengthen border security, Reuters reported.
The presidential office stated that Rahmon “strongly condemned the unlawful and provocative acts committed by Afghan citizens” and instructed security agencies to take effective steps to resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents.
Afghan authorities have not yet responded to Tajikistan’s request for comment.
