Five Indian Air Force personnel were killed after an Antonov An-32 military transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Jorhat Air Base in northeastern India on Saturday.
In a statement, the Indian Air Force expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
Local media footage showed thick black smoke rising above the air base, followed by images of the wreckage of the Russian-made aircraft surrounded by military personnel.
The An-32 is a twin-engine transport aircraft widely used by the Indian Air Force, which operates around 100 of the aging planes. In 2019, another An-32 crashed after taking off from Jorhat near the Chinese border, killing all 13 people on board.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of India's aging military transport fleet.
