On Sunday, clashes in Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp near the southern port city of Sidon left five people dead and seven others wounded, Palestinian officials reported.

According to confidential sources speaking to The Associated Press, the clashes were triggered when an unidentified assailant attempted to assassinate Islamist militant Mahmoud Khalil, leading to the tragic loss of one of his companions.

The situation escalated further as Islamist militants retaliated by assassinating a Palestinian military general affiliated with the Fatah group, along with three escorts, as confirmed by another Palestinian official to the AP.

Amidst the chaos, factions involved in the conflict employed assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, causing panic among residents who sought safety by fleeing the dangerous crossfire.

Ambulances raced through the narrow streets of Ein el-Hilweh to transport the wounded to hospitals, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Adding to the complexity of the incident, a mortar shell struck a military barracks outside the camp, injuring a soldier whose condition is currently stable, according to a statement issued by the Lebanese Army.

The Ein el-Hilweh camp, notorious for its lawlessness and recurring violence, houses approximately 55,000 individuals, as reported by the United Nations.
