A deadly shooting at a restaurant in southeastern Mexico claimed the lives of five people and left seven others injured on Saturday, according to the Directorate of Security and Civil Defense.

The Directorate of Security and Civil Defense announced that the shooting occurred in Villahermosa, Tabasco, where unidentified gunmen stormed the “La Casita Azul” restaurant and opened fire on diners.

Local and federal authorities have launched a coordinated manhunt, reviewing surveillance footage to identify and apprehend the attackers.

The state of Tabasco has seen a surge in violent crime in recent months. In November, another mass shooting at a Villahermosa bar left six dead and ten wounded.

This followed a similar attack two weeks earlier in Querétaro, where ten people were killed—a city previously considered insulated from the violence linked to organized crime.

According to official statistics, drug-related violence has claimed over 450,000 lives in Mexico since the government deployed the military to combat organized crime in 2006.
