At least five people were killed and 130 others injured after a powerful tornado struck southern Brazil on Friday, according to local authorities.

The civil defense agency in Paraná State confirmed the deaths in the town of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, where winds overturned vehicles and destroyed several homes. Images shared by local media showed widespread devastation across the area.

Officials reported that around 30 people sustained serious or moderate injuries. The town of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, home to about 14,000 residents, suffered the heaviest damage, according to the state’s environmental and monitoring agency.

Wind speeds were estimated between 180 and 250 kilometers per hour, uprooting trees and flattening houses.

The National Institute of Meteorology has maintained storm warnings for all of Paraná as well as neighboring southern states bordering Argentina and Uruguay.
