Five people were killed on Monday when a medical evacuation helicopter crashed at Al-Sara base, southwest of Kufra near Libya’s southern border, during a return from a medical mission.
Sources reported that the helicopter had been transporting a soldier from the Peace Paths Battalion following a vehicle accident, before crashing inside the base and resulting in fatalities among the crew.
The victims from Kufra include Mustafa Magdy Hamed Oweida and Ali Faiz Al-Nazzal, both affiliated with the Military Transport Department, and Faraj Al-Nazzal, a nurse at Martyr Atiya Al-Kasah Hospital. The helicopter’s pilot and co-pilot also perished in the crash.
A video circulating online shows flames rising from the crash site, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the cause of the crash, and an official statement is expected to provide more information on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
