At least five people have lost their lives in the Philippines as Typhoon Julian, locally known as Krathon, swept through the country, causing severe damage.

The Philippine Disaster Management Agency reported on Friday that four fatalities occurred in the Ilocos region, primarily due to drowning, while one person was electrocuted in the Cagayan Valley.

Typhoon Julian brought strong winds and heavy rains, triggering widespread flooding and landslides across several regions.

Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate their homes or seek shelter elsewhere as the storm wreaked havoc.

The damages to infrastructure have been estimated at over 700 million pesos (approximately $12.7 million), according to the agency's assessment.

Roads, bridges, and public utilities were among the hardest hit, with local authorities scrambling to provide aid to affected communities.

Typhoon Julian initially moved away from the Philippines on Tuesday, heading towards Taiwan.

However, the storm reversed course and returned on Thursday, intensifying into a powerful typhoon before weakening into a tropical depression on Friday.
