Five people were killed and several others injured after a tourist bus carrying nearly 50 passengers, including children, overturned on a highway in northern New York State, police confirmed on Friday.
According to New York Police Chief Andre Ray, the driver appeared to lose focus, overcorrected after veering off course, and crashed into a ditch.
He added that none of the injured were in critical condition, with many treated and later discharged.
Initial reports stated that 54 people were on board, though authorities later clarified that no children were among the dead, correcting earlier police information.
The bus had been returning from Niagara Falls, near the Canadian border, to New York City when the accident occurred on a highway near Pembroke.
Chief Ray said no charges had been filed and ruled out mechanical failure, illness, or intoxication as causes. The bus driver survived the crash and is cooperating with investigators.
Authorities dispatched interpreters to assist with communication for some of the injured passengers.
The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing as police work to establish the full sequence of events.
