A devastating landslide in the Yunnan province of southwest China on Monday resulted in the tragic loss of 47 lives as they were buried beneath the earth, as reported by official media outlets.

The landslide occurred at 5:51 a.m. local time on Monday in Jinping County, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

CCTV also revealed that the landslide buried 18 families under the debris, while more than 200 individuals were urgently evacuated from the area.

Authorities responded swiftly, dispatching over 200 rescue workers to the disaster-stricken region, along with numerous fire trucks and other equipment, according to CCTV.

Footage shared on social media depicted rescue workers in their orange jumpsuits searching among the rubble of a collapsed building amidst towering snow-covered mountains.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that efforts are underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Landslides are a common occurrence in the remote Yunnan region of China, which borders the steeply inclined Himalayan Mountain ranges.

China has witnessed a series of natural disasters in recent months, some of which were triggered by severe weather events.

In August, heavy rainfall led to a landslide near the northern city of Xi'an, claiming the lives of more than 20 individuals.

In June, another landslide in the southwestern Sichuan province of the country resulted in the loss of 19 lives.
