A major winter storm sweeping across the United States triggered a chain-reaction crash involving 45 vehicles in Indiana and forced the closure of a major interstate for nearly six hours.

American media outlets reported that the expansive snowstorm brought heavy snowfall across the Midwest, cancelling hundreds of flights and causing multiple traffic collisions during one of the busiest travel periods following the Thanksgiving holiday.

In Putnamville, Indiana, intense snowfall caused a series of rapid collisions along Interstate 70. Indiana State Police confirmed that 45 vehicles were involved.

Authorities reported no serious injuries, though the highway was temporarily shut down to clear damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow.

The storm’s impact extended nationwide. More than 1,400 flights were cancelled across the United States on Saturday, with the majority tied to the severe weather affecting the northern Midwest, according to aviation tracking service FlightAware.

The disruptive weather arrives as millions return home from holiday travel, heightening delays and safety concerns across several states.
