Austrian Farmer Discovers First Iron Meteorite in Austria, Dating Back 4.5 Billion Years
A farmer in Austria has made a remarkable discovery by finding the first scientifically verified iron meteorite in the country, weighing approximately 3 kilograms.
The meteorite was uncovered while he was working in a field at his farm in Hirschbach, near Innsbruck.
The University of Innsbruck confirmed the extraordinary find, with Jürgen Kuntz, an expert at the university's Institute of Mineralogy and Geology, affirming that this is the first documented iron meteorite found in Austria.
Kuntz noted that the meteorite is as old as the solar system itself, approximately 4.5 billion years.
He explained that meteorites serve as time capsules, providing insights into the formation of the solar system.
Kuntz expressed hope that further analysis would yield valuable information regarding the processes that shaped our solar neighborhood.
