In a devastating attack on Tuesday, gunmen on motorcycles killed around 40 people and set several homes ablaze in a village in north-central Nigeria, according to local residents.
Authorities, however, reported nine fatalities.
The attack occurred on Monday evening in the Wase area of Plateau State, a region long plagued by disputes over land and mining, as well as inter-community violence.
A spokesperson for Plateau State Police stated that the assailants were fleeing from a security operation in the Bengalala forest within the Wase local government area.
They subsequently attacked the villages of Zurok and Dakai late on Monday night.
This latest incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, where conflicts over resources and long-standing ethnic tensions often result in violent clashes.
The discrepancy in reported casualties highlights the chaotic nature of such attacks and the difficulties in obtaining accurate information from affected areas.
As Nigeria grapples with these security issues, the need for effective measures to protect vulnerable communities and address the root causes of violence remains critical.
