Four people were killed and several others wounded in a mass shooting that erupted in the small town of Leland, Mississippi, following a high school football game, according to state senator Derrick Simmons.

Simmons, who represents the area in the Mississippi Senate, said the shooting took place in the center of Leland, located in the Mississippi Delta region, where crowds had gathered after the game.

He confirmed that four of the roughly 20 injured were transported to a hospital in Greenville before being airlifted to a larger medical facility in Jackson, the state capital. All four remain in critical condition.

Simmons said he obtained the information from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.

Describing the scene, he said residents had been enjoying themselves before chaos erupted when gunfire broke out. Emergency services and law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions rushed to the scene.

Calling the incident senseless gun violence, Simmons expressed concern about the widespread circulation of firearms in the community.

No arrests have yet been made, and police have not identified any suspects. Simmons said he had confidence that investigators would uncover the truth.

He urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist authorities in their ongoing investigation.
