Four people have died after heavy rain triggered floods and landslides in northern Vietnam, according to state media on Saturday.

Vietnam's Disaster and Dyke Management Authority said the severe weather has damaged more than 238 hectares of rice fields and other crops across four northern mountainous provinces since Wednesday. Large numbers of livestock and poultry were also killed or swept away by floodwaters.

Authorities have deployed 500 rescue personnel to search for missing people and evacuate residents from areas at risk of landslides.

Natural disasters killed at least 30 people and caused more than $21.7 million in damage across Vietnam between January and June.

The Southeast Asian country typically experiences its rainy season from June to September, but scientists say human-driven climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
