Spanish authorities announced on Monday that the death toll from a massive wave that struck a natural swimming pool on the western coast of Tenerife has risen to four.

The powerful wave swept several swimmers into the sea, triggering a large emergency response.

According to the German Press Agency (DPA), the latest confirmed fatality was a woman who suffered a cardiac arrest during the incident, which occurred on Sunday near the Los Gigantes cliffs in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. Emergency crews attempted to resuscitate her and airlifted her to the hospital, but she later died from her injuries.

Canary Islands emergency services reported that rescue teams are still searching for another woman who was swept away by the waves. Media outlets noted that several people who were carried into the water managed to make it back to shore on their own.

Spanish public broadcaster RTVE stated that local authorities had issued warnings about high waves on Sunday. Earlier reports confirmed the deaths of two men and one woman before the discovery of the fourth victim.
