A tragic shooting incident in Minneapolis city in Minnesota, the United States, on Thursday resulted in multiple casualties, including a police officer and a suspect.

Local media, citing law enforcement sources, reported that up to four people were killed, with several others injured.

The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed that the situation remains active, with six people injured, including two law enforcement officers.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the Whittier neighborhood in South Central Minneapolis, one of the city's most densely populated areas.

The area is home to the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Details of the incident are still emerging, with the Minneapolis Star Tribune reporting that a 28-year-old police officer was among those killed.

Another officer is in critical condition following the exchange of gunfire with the suspect.

This marks the first time in over 20 years that a Minneapolis police officer has been fatally shot in the line of duty.
