At least four people have died in Mozambique after Cyclone Gezani swept across the country, days after leaving dozens dead and causing widespread destruction in neighboring Madagascar.

Local sources said the storm packed winds of up to 215 kilometers per hour, inflicting heavy damage on the coastal city of Inhambane, one of the largest and most cyclone prone urban centers in southern Mozambique.

The powerful storm also knocked out electricity to more than 130,000 people, according to national power companies, as infrastructure and residential areas sustained significant damage.

Earlier this week, authorities in Madagascar confirmed that Cyclone Gezani killed at least 40 people after slamming into the port city of Toamasina, the island nation’s second largest city with a population of about 400,000. The cyclone caused extensive destruction across the region, damaging homes, public buildings and transport networks.

The back to back impact of Cyclone Gezani underscores the growing threat of extreme weather events in the southwestern Indian Ocean, where powerful tropical storms continue to strain emergency response systems and infrastructure across vulnerable coastal nations.
