Four people, including two children, were killed in Belgium after a train collided with a school minibus in the northern town of Buggenhout on Tuesday morning.

Federal police said the victims included two students aged 12 and 15, the 49-year-old driver, and a 27-year-old supervisor. The minibus was carrying seven children to a special education school when the crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. local time.

Five other children were taken to hospital in critical but stable condition.

Belgian Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke said railway crossing barriers were closed at the time of the collision.

According to railway operator Infrabel, preliminary CCTV footage showed warning lights were red and the barrier was down when the minibus turned onto the crossing and was struck by the train.

Images from the scene showed the vehicle overturned near the railway tracks, while witnesses described the impact as extremely powerful.
