Torrential rains along the Texas-Mexico border have triggered severe flooding, leaving at least four people dead and stranding hundreds in submerged homes and vehicles.

Rescue crews worked tirelessly on Friday as heavy rainfall continued to pound the region.

Officials warned that the full extent of the destruction caused by record-breaking storms in Texas' Rio Grande Valley is only beginning to surface.

Across the border in Mexico, hundreds sought refuge in temporary shelters, while social media footage showed military personnel wading through chest-deep floodwaters.

In Texas, at least three fatalities were reported in Hidalgo County, where more than 21 inches (53 cm) of rain inundated the city of Harlingen.

The region, known for its vast agricultural lands, has suffered extensive damage to crops and livestock, according to the Texas Agriculture Commissioner.

Authorities in Hidalgo County provided limited details about the three deaths, confirming only that they were related to law enforcement operations. Meanwhile, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, an 83-year-old man drowned in Reynosa, just across the border from McAllen, Texas.

As recovery efforts continue, officials are urging residents to remain cautious, warning that floodwaters could persist and pose ongoing risks in the coming days.
