At least four migrants have died and around 20 remain missing after a boat carrying nearly 40 people capsized off the coast of the Dominican Republic, according to local authorities.

The vessel, known locally as a "yola," was undertaking an illegal journey toward the US territory of Puerto Rico when it sank in the Caribbean Sea. The passengers were reportedly attempting to reach American shores in search of better opportunities.

Rescue operations led by the Dominican Navy and Civil Defense successfully saved 17 individuals. Among the survivors were 10 Dominican nationals and 7 Haitians, including one child.

Authorities are continuing search and recovery efforts, although hopes are fading as time passes. Incidents like this underscore the dangers faced by migrants who resort to perilous sea routes in hopes of escaping poverty and political instability.
