At least four people have been killed and nine others are missing after flash floods and severe snowstorms struck parts of Iran over the past 48 hours, according to the country’s Red Crescent Society.

In a statement, the Iranian Red Crescent Society said the deaths and disappearances were reported in the provinces of Khuzestan and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, as extreme weather battered large areas of southern and western Iran.

Rescue teams have provided assistance to thousands of affected residents amid heavy rainfall and snowfall that damaged dozens of provinces. Emergency crews continue search operations for the missing while evacuating people from low-lying and high-risk areas threatened by rising waters and harsh winter conditions.

The latest deadly weather comes just weeks after earlier floods killed eight people in southern provinces including Fars and Khuzestan. Those floods submerged thousands of homes after a prolonged drought left the soil unable to absorb sudden heavy rainfall. More than 42,000 people required emergency assistance during that disaster.

Iran frequently experiences extreme weather events, with climate change, prolonged droughts and ageing infrastructure increasing the risk of deadly floods and storm damage

. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain cautious as further rainfall and snow are forecast in the coming days.
