A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern Mediterranean off the coast of Lebanon around midnight on Sunday, according to Lebanon’s seismic monitoring network.
The network said the tremor occurred at an estimated depth of about 35 kilometers beneath the seabed, making it noticeable in the capital Beirut and several other parts of the country.
Seismologists noted that the relatively shallow depth of the quake contributed to residents feeling the shaking more clearly than deeper earthquakes of similar magnitude. No injuries or material damage were reported.
Lebanon lies near several active geological fault lines in the eastern Mediterranean, and mild to moderate tremors are occasionally felt across the country, though most cause little or no damage.
