A moderate earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck the Balikesir region of Turkey on Tuesday, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The seismic event occurred at coordinates 39.22306° N latitude and 28.14167° E longitude. AFAD reported that the tremor originated at a shallow depth of approximately 6.91 kilometers, a factor that often increases how prominently a quake is felt by residents in the immediate vicinity.

Regional Context and Seismic History Turkey remains one of the world's most seismically active zones. The Youm7 report noted several significant historical events to provide context for this latest tremor:

June 2025: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Marmaris region in Muğla province.

February 2023: A catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated southern Turkey and northern Syria, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties and becoming one of the deadliest in the region's history.

Current Situation There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries following today's 3.5 magnitude tremor in Balikesir. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, though quakes of this magnitude typically do not cause structural damage. Residents in Balikesir and surrounding areas are advised to stay informed through official AFAD channels.
