A devastating fire broke out in a commercial building located south of Benin's capital, claiming the lives of at least 35 people, according to authorities who have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident.

The aftermath of the fire revealed the building in Seme-Podji, situated about 10 kilometres (6 miles) south of the capital city of Porto-Novo, reduced to gutted and charred ruins.

Additionally, the remains of vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, were left in a charred state, serving as a somber testament to the extent of the disaster, as documented by Benin's public broadcaster.

An official from the fire department, speaking to broadcaster ORTB, disclosed that the tragic accident occurred at a site primarily known for the storage and handling of gasoline.

Passersby managed to rescue three individuals before the arrival of firefighters, stated the official, Dallys Ahouangbegnon.

The fire, which ignited on a Saturday morning, is believed to have been caused during the unloading of bags of gasoline, as indicated by Beninese prosecutor Adam-Bongle Abdoubaki in a statement published by the local outlet Benin-news.com.

Among the victims, tragically, was a child, while more than a dozen individuals sustained injuries, Abdoubaki confirmed.

He further announced the establishment of a crisis unit to provide information and support to the families of the victims, gather essential details to determine the fire's cause, and ascertain any potential criminal liability.
