At least 34 civilians have been killed in a series of armed attacks targeting villages in Nigeria, according to local media and security officials.
The assaults were carried out by fighters from the extremist group Lakurawa, who attacked seven villages in Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria. Kebbi State Police spokesperson Bashir Usman said dozens of residents were killed when villagers attempted to resist the attackers.
A security report cited by local outlets placed the death toll at more than 34 civilians, highlighting the escalating violence in the region.
In a related development, Nigerian Defense Ministry Spokesperson Major General Samaila Ouba confirmed that approximately 100 US military personnel arrived in Nigeria on February 16. The deployment comes as the United States intensifies counterterrorism operations targeting armed groups across West Africa.
Northwestern Nigeria has experienced growing insecurity in recent years, with militant factions and armed groups launching repeated attacks on rural communities.
The latest violence underscores ongoing security challenges as Nigerian authorities seek to stabilize the region with international support.
