A boating accident in Vietnam has claimed the lives of at least 34 people after a tourist vessel capsized during a violent thunderstorm on Saturday.
Authorities have confirmed that eight passengers remain missing.
The vessel, named “Wonder Sea”, was carrying 48 tourists along with five crew members, all Vietnamese nationals, when it overturned in Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
According to local reports, rescue teams managed to save 11 people, pulling bodies from the water near the site of the accident. A 14-year-old boy was among the survivors, dramatically rescued after spending four hours trapped inside the overturned hull of the ship.
Emergency operations are still underway, with authorities racing to locate the missing passengers. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols during extreme weather conditions, particularly in tourist-heavy areas such as Ha Long Bay.
Vietnam’s government has launched an investigation into the disaster to determine the cause and whether negligence or violations of safety regulations played a role.
