On Friday evening, Thirty people, including Somali army officers, were killed in a suicide attack that targeted a mass gathering in front of a football field in the center of Mogadishu.
Government spokesman Ismail Mukhtar Omar said that the terrorist blew himself up outside the Abdullah Issa stadium where many people had gathered to listen to the Prime Minister Muhammad Hussein Roble's speech.
Moreover, local media quoted eyewitnesses, saying that "the suicide attack targeted a mass gathering that was preparing to enter a stadium in the city of Galkaabo, in the center of the country, during a strict security check."
According to the same sources, "the attack came just before the arrival of Roble to the stadium; he was scheduled to address the crowd since he arrived earlier today, as part of a tour in Galmudug."
It is noteworthy that the most prominent victims of the attack were the commander of the 21st pision of the army, Abdulaziz Abdullah Goji, the commander of the DNB Special Forces in Galmudug, Mukhtar Abdi Adam, and the former local official of the city called Mahmoud Yassin Ahmed, while the toll is still expected to rise.
The Somali terrorist youth movement claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a statement carried by the "MEMO" news website, which is affiliated with the aforementioned organization.
Also, the movement said in a statement that "the target of the attack was the Somali Prime Minister, Roble."
