Three members of Italy’s Carabinieri police force were killed on Tuesday in an explosion during a police operation in northern Italy, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.
The blast, which occurred in the town of Castel d’Azzano, south of Verona, also injured 13 people, including other police officers, Carabinieri personnel, and firefighters.
Authorities said the officers had been carrying out a search operation at a rural house where three individuals were reportedly living. The explosion caused the two-story building to collapse, trapping the officers beneath the rubble.
Local media reported that a man and his sister, both in their sixties, have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the explosion. The woman, who was also injured in the incident, is receiving medical treatment.
Police are now searching for a third person believed to be related to the pair and who had also been residing in the house.
Carabinieri officials in Verona have not yet commented on the details of the operation or the possible cause of the explosion.
