A recent study conducted by the University of Almería (UAL) has revealed that over 3 million people in Spain live in flood-prone areas, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to rising flood risks.

Published on Thursday, the study highlights critical regions most at risk and aims to improve national flood mitigation policies, adaptation strategies, and response efforts.

The study, titled "Flood Risk Exposure Approach in Spain Through the National Flood Risk Mapping System", was featured in the scientific journal Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk.

The findings offer a detailed look at the geographical distribution of flood exposure, revealing that around 3.26 million people, or 6.9% of Spain's population, are at risk of flooding.

The study indicates that the Mediterranean coastline is particularly vulnerable to flooding, with potential economic losses amounting to at least €122.132 million.

The research presents new insights into the spatial patterns of flood risk exposure across the country, providing crucial data for improving flood risk management and decision-making processes.

This data can help enhance regional planning, urban protection strategies, and civil defense measures, ultimately contributing to more effective flood risk reduction and adaptation policies.
