Three Colombian soldiers have been killed and two others injured in a drone attack carried out by rebel groups, highlighting the growing use of unmanned weapons in the country’s internal conflict.
The Colombian army said the attack took place in Ipiales, a town in the southwest near the border with Ecuador.
Military officials attributed the assault to a group known as Comandos de la Frontera.
In a statement, the army said operations in the area will continue, with intensified efforts to locate and neutralise those responsible.
The incident underscores rising security challenges for Colombia’s armed forces, as drone-based attacks become more frequent amid ongoing clashes with drug trafficking networks and rebel factions.
Some of these groups are linked to former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which signed a peace agreement with the government in 2016 but has since seen splinter factions return to armed activity.
