Three people were killed in a series of explosions caused by fireworks in residential buildings in the northern city of Tianjin, China, local officials said Wednesday.

The authorities believe that a 46-year-old man who was arrested caused the explosions, which occurred shortly after 20:00 Tuesday.

The state channel "CCTV" reported that a number of people were injured in the explosions and are still receiving treatment from the emergency teams.

Explosions rocked two residential complexes one kilometer apart in the eastern part of Tianjin, about 110 kilometers southeast of Beijing.

Footage circulated on social media showed firefighters trying to help victims inside an apartment building, the exterior of which appeared to be severely damaged.

One of the videos showed second-floor balconies hanging precariously over piles of rubble as flames came out of an upper-floor window.

The National Business Daily reported that 26 homes were damaged as a result of the blasts and that 34 people had been evacuated.
