A devastating fire at the historic Bicester Motion site, a former Royal Air Force base in Oxfordshire, has claimed the lives of three individuals, including two firefighters and a civilian.
The blaze broke out late Thursday near the village of Bicester, sending dense plumes of black smoke into the sky, visible from miles away. Multiple explosions were also reported in the vicinity.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at about 6:40 p.m., where the fire had engulfed parts of the site that houses nearly 50 specialist businesses focused on classic car restoration and aviation.
Despite rapid response efforts, two firefighters tragically lost their lives, while two others sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment.
Rob MacDougall, Chief Fire Officer for Oxfordshire, expressed his profound sorrow over the loss, confirming that the victims’ families have been informed and are receiving support. He also urged the public and media to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
By Friday morning, fire crews had successfully contained the blaze, though small fires continued to burn within the complex. Roads that were previously closed due to the incident have been reopened, but authorities warned of continued traffic congestion and urged caution.
Eyewitnesses posted videos and photos online showing towering columns of smoke rising from the site. One nearby resident reported hearing repeated explosions and seeing ash fall near his property.
In a public advisory, police urged residents to avoid the area and requested those living nearby to remain indoors with windows shut as a safety precaution.
Bicester Motion is recognized as one of the UK’s most significant heritage motoring and aviation sites. Historic England has described it as one of the most complete and representative surviving examples of a former RAF base.
