Three people have died and several medical workers were hospitalized after exposure to an unidentified substance in the US state of New Mexico, according to local authorities.

Peter Nieto, mayor of the town of Mountainair, said emergency crews discovered two people already dead when they arrived at the scene, while a third local resident later died following the incident.

Authorities said several first responders and healthcare workers who came into contact with the victims were also taken to hospital for evaluation and treatment. Some have since been discharged, while others reportedly developed symptoms after exposure.

Officials stressed that there is currently no indication the incident involved an airborne threat. Preliminary assessments suggest the exposure may have occurred through direct contact with an unknown substance potentially transferred between individuals.

Emergency and health authorities continue to investigate the source and nature of the substance involved, while the area remains under close monitoring.

The incident has raised concerns among local residents and emergency services as investigators work to determine whether hazardous materials or toxic contamination played a role in the deaths and illnesses.
