At least three people were killed and around 22 others injured after a major fire broke out in a residential building on the outskirts of Budapest early Friday, Hungarian authorities said.

Flames spread through a two-story building in the Budakeszi area near the Hungarian capital during the early morning hours. Firefighters from Budapest managed to bring the blaze under control, according to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management.

More than 40 paramedics and 18 ambulances were dispatched to the scene as emergency crews worked to rescue survivors and secure the site.

Firefighters recovered several survivors from the building and removed three gas cylinders. The bodies of two men and one woman were found beneath a collapsed section of the structure, a spokesperson for the disaster management authority confirmed.

Medical teams treated 22 people for fire-related injuries, including four in life-threatening condition. The injured were transported to eight hospitals across Budapest for further treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire as officials assess the structural damage and safety conditions of the building.
