At least three people were killed and eleven others injured when a UPS cargo plane crashed near Louisville International Airport in the US state of Kentucky, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The aircraft, an MD-11 model, went down shortly after takeoff from Louisville while en route to Honolulu. The FAA confirmed that three crew members were aboard at the time of the crash.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said that at least three fatalities had been confirmed and warned that the death toll could rise. He added that eleven individuals had been taken to nearby hospitals, some in critical condition.

The crash prompted a temporary shutdown of Louisville’s airspace, leading to anticipated disruptions in cargo operations.

Authorities and emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
