At least three people have been killed and more than 100,000 displaced after Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the Philippines, bringing heavy rainfall, floods, and strong winds across several provinces, officials and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the national weather bureau, the typhoon was packing sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching up to 195 kilometers per hour as it swept through the central and eastern regions of the country.
Authorities reported that the victims included an elderly man who drowned in floodwaters in the southern province of Leyte, a baby whose body was found in floodwaters in Cebu City, and a 62-year-old man who died after a coconut tree fell on him in Bohol province.
Regional disaster official Danilo Atienza said one person remains missing after being swept away by floodwaters in Leyte.
The typhoon has caused widespread power and communication outages in affected areas, forcing residents to seek refuge on rooftops as water levels rose overnight due to continuous heavy rain.
More than 130 domestic flights have been cancelled, while at least 9,000 people were stranded after the Philippine Coast Guard suspended sea travel in several regions due to hazardous conditions.
Authorities continue to monitor the storm’s movement as relief operations are underway to assist displaced families and restore essential services.
