The death toll from last week’s devastating gas tanker explosion in Mexico City has risen to 29, with 16 others injured, local authorities confirmed on Sunday.

The blast occurred on 13 September when a truck carrying around 50,000 liters of gas exploded while crossing a bridge in the densely populated district of Iztapalapa in eastern Mexico City. The explosion triggered a massive fire and left dozens of victims with severe burns.

An earlier report on Thursday put the number of dead at 21, but the toll has since increased as more victims succumbed to their injuries.

Investigators from the attorney general’s office said the tragedy was likely caused by excessive speed. Their findings revealed that the tanker’s reservoir ruptured following an impact, releasing a large gas cloud that ignited almost instantly.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada said her administration would move to tighten regulations on fuel transport vehicles in the capital, home to more than 9.2 million residents, in an effort to prevent similar disasters.
