At least 29 people have died following torrential rainfall over the weekend in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local authorities confirmed on Monday.
The unusually heavy downpours, occurring despite the ongoing dry season, caused severe flooding across the city, submerging roads, crippling infrastructure, and triggering widespread power and water outages.
Governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba, announced that emergency evacuation and temporary resettlement efforts are underway. He urged residents to remain vigilant, raise disaster awareness, and take precautionary measures to mitigate further risks.
Meteorological authorities reported rainfall levels reaching 90 millimeters, the highest recorded in this period in recent years. The country typically experiences its rainy season from November to May.
However, forecasts predict more heavy rainfall in the coming days, potentially worsening conditions in the city, home to over 17 million people.
