At least 25 people were killed in an avalanche in northeastern Afghanistan, with others still trapped, according to a local official on Monday, following heavy snowfall across much of the country.

Jamilullah Hashimi, head of the Department of Information and Culture in Nuristan province, told AFP, "Snow is still falling, rescue teams are on their way to the site, and the death toll could rise."

The avalanche struck the village of Nakeri in the Tatin Valley of Nuristan on Sunday night, burying homes under snow and debris.

Hashimi added that around 20 homes were either destroyed or severely damaged.
