According to a local leader and another from the civil society, the death toll from the attack on a village in the Ituri province in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 25, after a government spokesperson and a United Nations document confirmed the attack on Saturday.
The leaders, as reported by Reuters, stated that the Cooperative for the Development of Congo, known as CODECO, one of several militias operating in the eastern part of the country, is responsible for the killings that took place in the village of Galla, located 70 kilometers northwest of the city of Bunia.
Local leader Panzala Dani and Vital Tongolo, a civil society leader, told Reuters that 15 bodies were found along with ten bodies recovered on Saturday.
A United Nations document reviewed by Reuters and the spokesperson for the governor of Ituri province, Jules Ngongo, confirmed the attack, stating that the initial death toll is ten civilians.
Ngongo further added that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
