Japan has ordered the evacuation of more than 2.2 million people as Tropical Storm Mikala approaches the country's southern islands, bringing torrential rain, strong winds, and heightened risks of flooding and landslides.

The storm, which passed through Taiwan before heading toward Japan's Ryukyu Islands, has already forced the cancellation of more than 200 flights, suspended dozens of train services, and closed several highways, according to Japanese authorities.

Officials warned of flash floods, river overflows, and landslides across southern and western Japan as emergency crews prepared for worsening weather conditions.

In Taiwan, heavy rainfall prompted authorities to close schools and government offices in three regions, affecting nearly six million residents. Severe flooding also disrupted rail services linking the island's north and south.

No fatalities have been reported in Taiwan, though authorities are evacuating residents from vulnerable mountain communities as heavy rain is expected to continue into next week before gradually easing.
