At least 21 people have been killed in sudden flash floods in Morocco after exceptional rainfall hit the coastal province of Safi, according to Moroccan authorities.
The deadly floods struck the Atlantic-facing region on Sunday following intense downpours that lasted for around an hour, overwhelming drainage systems and sweeping through residential areas.
Local authorities in Safi said in a statement that 32 people were injured in the floods. Most of those hurt have since been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment, while others remain under medical observation.
Officials said the heavy rain flooded around 70 homes and shops, swept away 10 vehicles and caused widespread road closures across Safi city and nearby areas. Emergency and rescue operations are still ongoing.
The statement added that the unusually intense rainfall led to rapid flooding in a short period of time, catching residents off guard and causing extensive damage to infrastructure.
Moroccan emergency services have been deployed across the affected areas as authorities assess the scale of the destruction and continue efforts to support victims.
