At least 21 people were killed after a major fire swept through a hotel in India's capital, New Delhi, on Wednesday, marking one of the city's deadliest fire incidents in recent years.

Police said the blaze broke out at a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of south Delhi, a residential district popular with students and young professionals.

Authorities confirmed that at least 40 people were rescued from the building as emergency crews battled the fire.

Television footage showed flames engulfing the hotel, with thick smoke billowing from the structure and charred facades visible as residents gathered nearby to watch the emergency response.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the disaster.
