About 200 people or more were killed by armed bandits in northwest Nigeria's Zamfara state this week, an official revealed on Sunday.

At least 58 people were killed in northwest Nigeria’s Zamfara state in Wednesday and Thursday attacks.

The attacks took place in several villages in the Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas of the state, Ibrahim Bello Zauma, a spokesperson for the governor of Zamfara state Bello Matawalle, told Xinhua.

"We recorded 36 (deaths) at Bukkuyum and 22 (deaths) in Anka so far," Zauma said.

Moreover, he noted that the state governor had visited the affected areas to condole the people over the tragic incident of bandit attacks in the areas.

Zauma asserted that the government was putting in place strategies to halt bandit attacks in the state.

Armed banditry has been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months.

Lastly, residents pointed out that an estimated 200 people or more have been killed in villages in Zamfara during deadly reprisal attacks following military airstrikes on their hideouts this week.
