At least 20 people have been killed after armed militants from the Allied Democratic Forces stormed a hospital in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday night, according to local authorities.
Local officer John Nuwe told the German news agency that the fighters murdered 18 patients, looted medicines and set fire to nearby homes in the town of Byambwe, located in North Kivu province.
Nuwe added that two more victims were burned to death inside their homes close to the hospital.
The Allied Democratic Forces, which originated in neighbouring Uganda and is considered a branch of the Islamic State group, has been active in eastern Congo for nearly three decades. The group frequently carries out deadly assaults on schools, churches and medical facilities.
